Moving Day Again for Our Director

Our Director, Rick Palmer has now moved into the law office in the back of the Academic Advisement Center. This will be his 6th move. We suspect he only has one more move to make when we move into the Holland building next summer.

Jared Burton Leaves Us for the University of Arizona

Jared is now a Wild Cat instead of DSC's "Big Dee" the bull! We wish you success Jared in coming back with your PhD!!!

Annual Pine Valley Retreat

Our annual Pine Valley Retreat was held on Thursday, August 4th, 2011. Eric Robinson was one of our guest speakers. Eric is a therapist who assists our students who visit the Health & Wellness Center. He also teaches at the University of Phoenix. He discussed the challenges and recommendations of the mental health needs of today's college students and how we advisors can assist our students. We also did some roll playing in the following ways:

1) Reviewing the changing mental health needs of today's college students.
2) The challenges posed by both the growing number of students with serious psychological problems on campus and the increase in the number of students seeking counseling.
3) The implications of student mental health problems for the student, faculty, staff and the institution.
4) Strategies for responding to the surge in mental health needs on college campuses.

Bridget Sheffer, a Communication Lecturer/Advisor was invited and presented at the Utah Advising Orientation Association, UAOA. We invited her to present the information to group. She presented on "Responding to Threats: Individual Crisis Management." This information was helpful to all who attend in learning new ideas or reinforcing what was already known.

Thanks to both Eric and Bridget and all of you who attended!

Meet Our Peer Advisors

Stop by our Academic Advisement Center to meet our Peer Advisors. Our Peer Advisors assist the Academic Advisors in so many ways. They assist students in choosing classes, setting up schedules, and registering for classes. They take part in the summer Advisement & Registration Orientation with multiple responsibilities and assist with early bird registration of high school seniors. Answering phones, making and directing appointments and direct walk-in students to the appropriate advisor is of high importance along with maintaining accurate schedules for the Academic Advisors. They also assist other departments as needed to maintain the continuity of the registration and admissions procedures.

Bridget was invited to present along with winning a scholarship for being a first time attendee and first time presenter. She presented on Responding to Threats: Individual Crisis Management. Jared was invited to present at a networking session on Improving Services for At-Risk/Academic Standard Students.

Who Says We Don't Have Any Fun

Jared Burton hates the Yankees and loves the Red Socks so Joe, Whitney and Shane decided to decorate his office in Yankees memorabilia & tin foil.

Thanks goes to all of the advisors from Millcreek High School Seniors.

One of our many high school trips to Beaver, Cedar, Delta, Kanab, Moapa Valley, Valley & Virgin Valley to assist the seniors with registration.

2011 High School Advisement & Registration

Advisement provides the opportunity for our local schools to register their seniors for DSC courses at their high school. The local high schools included Desert Hills, Dixie, Enterprise, Hurricane, Pine View, Snow Canyon and Tuacahn.

We also provided the same experience for Beaver, Canyon View, Cedar, Delta, Kanab, Moapa Valley, Valley and Virgin Valley . We extend the same for Millcreek seniors, only we invited them on campus for an advisement & registration session. We also sponsored an evening session for those seniors who could not attend their high school A&R session. We do this to provide better customer service for our students.

2011 Centennial Commencement Exercises

Fall, spring, and summer graduates were honored at Dixie State College of Utah’s Centennial Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 6, 2011, at 2:00 p.m., in the Burns Arena. The ceremony provided an opportunity for the college to pay special tribute to the graduates for the outstanding efforts they have shown in earning their degrees. This was an opportunity for the graduates to share the excitement and importance of their academic accomplishments with faculty, fellow graduates, family, and friends.

DSC celebrated its first graduating class in Psychology, Theater, Communication w/ an Emphasis in Organization & Leadership, and Integrated Studies w/ a Criminal Justice Emphasis.

"Given that Dixie State College was originally founded by the LDS Church a century ago, it seems appropriate to acknowledge our roots as we prepare to enter our next 100 years," DSC President Dr. Stephen D. Nadauld said. "Accordingly, we will be honored to welcome President Thomas S. Monson to our campus as our Centennial Commencement speaker. This will be a great opportunity for our graduates to receive counsel and encouragement as they prepare to enter into the next phase of their lives."
